Shipping Your Bike to a Wild West Cycling Adventure Tour
Whenever you go for a day ride back home, there is always one important part of your team that shares the experience with you - your bicycle. This page discusses how you can share the lifelong riding experiences from our adventure tours with your key partner by shipping your bicycle to the start of our tours. There are two main ways that guests use to ship their bikes to the start of our tours and back. Guests either bring their bikes with them through their mode of transportation, usually a passenger airliner, or ship them to Caesar's Cyclery, our local bike shop, via UPS. An advantage of bringing your bike with you when you travel is that your bike will always be with you. However, it may be somewhat cumbersome moving around the transportation terminals with it. An advantage of shipping your bike via UPS is ease of travel. However, you must send your bike to Caesar's Cyclery at least one week, and preferably one and a half weeks, before the start of your adventure tour. This means that you will not be on this specific bike for around 7 to 10 days. Looking at this positively, at least you will have given yourself a sufficient taper before the many, full days of riding on our adventure tours. Below is more detailed information on the processes and costs to ship your bike by the various methods.
Boxing Your Bike to Travel Along with You If you would like to ship your bike along with you as you travel, you will most likely have to have your bike placed into a cardboard bike box. To reduce the width of the bike box, loosen the handlebar from the stem or the stem from the steerer tube and turn it 90 degrees. You will probably have to secure the handlebar to the top tube either with bubble wrap, tape, or bungy cords. Also, remove the pedals from the crank. To reduce the height of the bike box, you may lower your seat. If you do this, remember to measure and record beforehand the linear distance from the center of the crank (where it attaches to the bottom bracket) to the top of the saddle along the seat tube. By having this measurement, you will be able to place your saddle at precisely its prior height. To reduce the length of the bike box, you may remove both wheels and secure them along both sides of the bike's main triangle. Amtrak, however, prefers that you leave both wheels within their stays. For a fee, your local bike shop can assist you with boxing your bike for travel.
Bringing Your Bike on an Airliner Major air carriers such as American Airlines (800-433-7300), United Airlines (800-241-6522), and Southwest Airlines (800-435-9792) will usually accept boxed bicycles at check-in. If you require a bike box from an airline, there may be around a $10 charge for the box. Importantly, both American and United charges around $80 one-way to ship a bicycle on your flight, while Southwest charges around $50 one-way. Please contact your air carrier prior to check-in to learn about their specific policy concerning the shipment of bicycles on their flights.
Bringing Your Bike on Amtrak Amtrak has a number of options for passengers to travel with their bikes aboard their trains. Please click on the links in this paragraph learn more about your options aboard Amtrak, and contact Amtrak (800-872-7245) before boarding to ensure that a particular option is available.
Bringing Your Bike on Greyhound Lines Greyhound Lines allows bicycles on board as baggage as long as they are properly boxed. Please click on the Greyhound links in this paragraph to learn more about shipping a bike aboard Greyhound. Please note that there may be a minor, additional charge for shipping a bicycle with Greyhound.
Note: For guests that bring their bikes with them in their travels, we can assist you with tools to reassemble and disassemble your bike prior to and at the conclusion of the tour, respectively. In fact, if we are not overly involved with tour operations, we will perform these services for you at no additional charge.
Shipping Your Bike via UPS To obtain rate and time quotes for shipping your bike via UPS, please click on the UPS link here or the UPS logo in the left column. After arriving at the UPS homepage, Select Your Location. Then, click on the Calculate Time and Cost quick link. On the Calculate Time and Cost form, enter the City and Zip Codes for the Ship From and Ship To locations, respectively. If you need to determine a zip code, please use this USPS link or the USPS logo in the left column. For Shipment Type, select Package (not Freight) and enter the approximate weight of your bike (usually 20-30 lbs.). After making these entries, click on the Calculate Time and Cost button. On the Provide Package Information page, select the most fitting manner in which UPS will receive your bike. Many guests have their local bike shops disassemble and ship their bikes, so you may choose On-Call Pickup as an approximation of this. Under Package Information - Packaging, select Your Packaging. Then, enter the Length, Width, and Height dimensions in inches for your bike's box. I recommend 42" for the length, 10" for the width, and 30" for the height for a medium-sized, tightly-packed bike. In the Declared Value box, enter the value of the bike that you are shipping. Now, click on the Submit button to obtain various rate and time quotes. UPS uses what is known as Dimensional Weight versus actual weight for items that have a high package size-to-weight ratio, such as bicycles. Please keep in mind that the rates shown are for one-way shipping.
Incoming bikes for our tours should be shipped to: Caesar's Cyclery, 29 San Anselmo Ave., San Anselmo, CA 94960 (415-721-0805).
